Fighting surgical burnout: The EU-funded KEEPCARING project

Surgical staff face extreme stress, with many struggling with burnout, and the growing shortage of healthcare professionals is putting even greater pressure on hospital teams. Led by Marlies Schijven, surgeon and researcher at Amsterdam UMC, the KEEPCARING project is tackling this crisis head-on.

In an interview with CNV Werkend NL, Schijven highlighted the increasing uncertainty in surgical care due to staff shortages. “I sometimes have to tell patients at the clinic, ‘You may be informed on the day of your surgery that it won’t proceed,’” she explains, underscoring the urgent need for solutions.

With Europe’s healthcare workforce facing mounting challenges, KEEPCARING is working to improve well-being, prevent burnout, and create a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system.
